How a Craft Brewery Starts: The Hops & Joey Journey
Behind every craft brewery is a story — usually involving passion, experimentation and a lot of trial and error. Hops & Joey Brewing Co began with a simple idea: create honest, small-batch beer inspired by Kangaroo Valley.
From home brewing to brand
Like many craft breweries, Hops & Joey started with home brewing. Experimenting with recipes, refining flavours and sharing beers with friends laid the foundation for what would become a brand.
Why Kangaroo Valley?
Kangaroo Valley isn’t just a location — it’s a mindset. The natural environment, community spirit and slower pace influenced the way we think about beer. We wanted our beers to reflect that: approachable, balanced and distinctly Australian.
The challenges of starting a brewery
Launching a craft brewery involves:
-
recipe development,
-
equipment decisions,
-
branding and design,
-
regulatory approvals,
-
building an audience.
It’s a gradual process, and we’re proud to be growing step by step rather than rushing scale.
What’s next for Hops & Joey?
We’re focused on refining our core beers, releasing limited batches and building a community around the brand. Our goal isn’t to be the biggest brewery — it’s to create beer people genuinely enjoy.
